On 12 August 2013, Monday, “Dumpling Making” was held successfully in Kowloon City Baptist Church Neighbourhood Elderly Centre (Lok Fu). The activity aimed to enhance interactions and communications between students and elderly. In addition, this allowed the elderly to share their wisdom with the new generation who are not good at cooking. Besides, we invited RTHK to take part in our activity. Two famous artists — Gigi Suk Yee Wong and Sherman Chung were also invited as guests to share with us their experiences of making dumplings. Everyone enjoyed the whole process so much.
Before the activity, we expected that most of the elderly were good at making dumplings. However, most of the elderly said that they seldom make and eat dumplings. We were able to understand the life of the elderly in the past and this reminded us that we were stereotyping them. This experience enhanced our communication skills and allowed us to chat with the older adults with ease.
